HC Deb 02 December 1952 vol 508 c1282
45. Mr. Carmichael

asked the Prime Minister what representations were made to Her Majesty's Government by the South African Government for the services of the chief of M.I.5; and why the said official is visiting that country.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Winston Churchill)

No representations have been made to Her Majesty's Government in this matter, but I understand that Her Majesty's Government in the Union of South Africa have asked Sir Percy Sillitoe, who is now in Kenya, whether it would be possible for him to visit the Union. In view of Sir Percy Sillitoe's other engagements, it has not been possible for him to visit South Africa. The last part of the Question does not therefore arise.
