§ 25. Mr. Lewisasked the Minister of Food if he is aware that, between November, 1951, and the middle of May, 1952, the price of canned meat and meat products went up by 11 per cent; and if he will explain the reasons for this increase.
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeMany meat products are free of price control and I 1090 cannot say how the average price moved during the period in question. The controlled maximum prices of a number of canned meats and meat products were increased in March, 1952, to take account of higher manufacturing costs. Many controlled products are now selling below maximum price.
§ Mr. LewisIn view of the fact that since controls have gone off prices have risen, will the Minister consider reintroducing price control if prices do not drop by the end of this year?
§ Major Lloyd GeorgeThe prices had to go up even though there were controls. In fact when the Election came upon us the late Administration had an Order ready which we put in force in March.
§ Mr. LewisWould the right hon. and gallant Gentleman answer my question, which was that if prices do not come down by the end of this year will be consider re-introducing price control?
