HC Deb 22 May 1950 vol 475 cc1636-7
33. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Food to what extent unemployment in the fishing industry is attributable to the decontrol in the price of fish; and how much to the imports of foreign caught fish.

Mr. F. Willey

I do not think that decontrol of prices has contributed and it is impossible to assess the influence of imports in isolation from the many other factors now being examined by the Ministers concerned.

Mr. Awbery

Is it not a fact that we finance the Icelandic fishery industry and enable them to purchase trawlers in this country, so that they can send their fish here and do our fishermen out of employment?
