HC Deb 05 December 1950 vol 482 cc189-90
32. Mr. A. R. W. Low

asked the Secretary of State for War whether civil servants employed in Record Offices who are paid on a weekly basis are paid in arrears or advance; and what arrangements are made when there is a change in the system of payment.

Mr. Strachey

Civil servants employed in Record Offices and paid on a weekly basis are normally paid in arrear, in accordance with general Civil Service practice. Any arrangements necessitated by a change in this system would be agreed with the employees' representatives.

Mr. Low

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that at the Infantry Record Office in Perth a change has recently been made, and that civilians employed there, in order to get their pay on to an arrear basis instead of in advance, have had a substantial amount of money deducted each week? Has that been brought to his notice? Is he satisfied that it is a fair arrangement?

Mr. Strachey

Perhaps the hon. Member will let me have particulars of that case.
