HC Deb 21 February 1949 vol 461 cc1581-2
40. Mr. Langford-Holt

asked the Minister of Food why he has declined to accept an invitation for an officer of his Department to address a public meeting in Shrewsbury on "The Law, the Housewife and the Enforcement Officer."

Mr. Strachey

Because my Department has no regular speakers available to deal with this specialised subject and is unable to spare a sufficiently senior officer from his official duties.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Can the right hon. Gentleman tell the House whether these enforcement officers possess any powers except those of the ordinary citizen; where the ordinary citizen can obtain precise details of those powers; and, if the ordinary citizen has not been able to obtain those details, will he let me have them?

Mr. Strachey

Yes, Sir. If the hon. Gentleman will put down that Question, I will give an answer to it.

Mr. Langford-Holt

I asked the right hon. Gentleman whether he would let me have the precise information?
