HC Deb 21 February 1949 vol 461 c1582
44. Mr. Harrison

asked the Minister of Food why he is continuing the ban on the rail movement of potatoes from the Lincolnshire area, in view of the fact that consignees have expressed preference for rail Transport and that approximately 20 motor vehicles a day are at present being loaded fully with potatoes for movement.

Mr. Strachey

The ban is only on rail movement into Lancashire and Cheshire, South Wales and the South-West and was designed to help the clearance of locally grown potatoes. We shall soon be lifting the ban on rail movement into Lancashire, which should help Lincolnshire growers.

Mr. Harrison

Has the Minister considered removing the ban completely, in view of the fact that marketers have requested that this ban on rail movement should be removed?

Mr. Strachey

I think that it will be possible to remove the ban completely in due course.
