HC Deb 22 September 1948 vol 456 cc887-8
62. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Minister of Food whether he is now in a position to make an announcement on the distribution of rice; what will be the price to the public; and how many points will be required.

Dr. Summerskill

I would refer my hon. Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend to the hon. and gallant Member for Chelsea (Commander Noble) on 20th September. A maximum retail price of 9d. per lb. is already prescribed for rice. The number of points required for points ration commodities is decided shortly before distribution is about to be made.

Mr. Joynson-Hicks

Can the Minister deny the reports which appeared in the Press that this rice is to be re-transported back to the countries from which it was originally imported?

Dr. Summerskill

My right hon. Friend has explained to the House that this might have to be considered.
