HC Deb 04 May 1948 vol 450 c1077
27. Mr. Granville Sharp

asked the Secretary of State for War what classes of tradesmen and other personnel have withheld from them at the present time the right to purchase their discharge from the Regular Army.

Mr. Shinwell

As my right hon. Friend the Minister of Defence pointed out in his statement on 17th March, discharge by purchase is a privilege and not a right, except as provided in the Army Act for soldiers with less than three months' service. I am arranging for copies of the War Office instruction on this subject to be placed in the Library. This instruction contains a list of tradesmen who are not at present allowed to purchase their discharge.

Mr. Sharp

Can my right hon. Friend say whether many men are involved?

Mr. Shinwell

Of course, we have a very large number of tradesmen in the Army.
