§ 23. Mr. Gammansasked the Secretary of State for War if he is yet in a position to make a statement on the rioting of Ceylonese troops in Singapore and the more recent occurrences in Kuala Lumpur.
§ Mr. ShinwellI have received reports on two further incidents which occurred on 22nd and 24th April involving Ceylonese Pioneers at Kuala Lumpur. These incidents appear to be the result of an affray which occurred between a few of these Ceylonese troops and a local Malayan wedding party. A further court of inquiry is at present sitting, and when I have seen the reports I will write to the hon. Member about these incidents also. I have not yet received reports resulting from the court of inquiry investigating the rioting of Ceylonese troops in Singapore.
§ Mr. GammansIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that it is two weeks since he gave me exactly the same answer with 1077 regard to the rioting in Singapore, and in view of the fact that a good deal of damage appears to have been done, cannot he give the House a fuller statement than the one he has just made?
§ Mr. ShinwellI am fully aware that two weeks have elapsed since the hon. Member asked me a Question. I have tried to obtain the necessary information, but unfortunately it has not yet arrived.
§ Mr. BramallCan the Minister say what is the division of responsibility for these troops as between His Majesty's Government in this country and the Ceylon Government?
§ Mr. ShinwellThat does not appear in the Question, and I should have to have notice before I could answer.
