§ 6. Mr. Goronwy Robertsasked the Minister of Labour the present number of persons registered as unemployed at the Colwyn Bay office of his Department; how many of these are from the Llysfaen district; and if he will give comparable figures for the end of March, 1948.
§ Mr. IsaacsOne hundred and thirty-two at 12th April, compared with 141 at 15th March. Separate figures for the Llysfaen district are not available.
§ 12. Mr. G. Robertsasked the Minister of Labour if he is aware that a considerable number of employees at the I.C.I. quarries at Llysfaen, near Colwyn Bay, are being displaced because of mechanisation; and what steps he is taking to provide alternative employment for them in the locality.
§ Mr. IsaacsI understand that 52 men will shortly be displaced because of mechanisation. Of these three have already been found other work and there are good prospects of placing up to 20 of the others in the very near future. Every effort will be made to place the remainder as quickly as possible.
§ Mr. RobertsMay I ask whether the efforts to place the remainder of these men means placing them in areas fairly close to their present homes?
§ Mr. IsaacsYes, Sir. Every effort will be made to provide the men with work adjacent to their place of residence.
Vice-Admiral TaylorIs the Minister aware that a large number of Questions 1067 have been put dealing with the question of unemployment in this country, and is that not a rather significant fact? The point is that there is a large amount of unemployment.
