HC Deb 01 March 1948 vol 448 c6
10. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minster of Food what weight of turnips he has bought and is putting into bags and is storing for consumption later this year; whether he is aware that turnips so stored are useless for human or animal consumption; and will he make a statement.

Dr. Summerskill

Seventy tons. My right hon. Friend is fully conversant with the keeping qualities of this vegetable and d does not propose to keep the swedes in store until they are unfit for human or animal consumption.

Sir W. Smithers

Why did the Minister order the keeping in store of turnips when they are best kept in the ground? Is the hon. Lady aware that the Minister is becoming the laughing stock of the whole country?
