HC Deb 01 March 1948 vol 448 cc5-6
9. Sir Waldron Smithers

asked the Minister of Food why, for three weeks immediately preceding the rise in the price of eggs from 1¾d. to 3d. each, no allocation of eggs was made by his Ministry.

Dr. Summerskill

Over 13 million dozen eggs were allocated by my Department in Great Britain during the three weeks in question.

Sir W. Smithers

Is the hon. Lady sure that they were allocated all over the country, and will she ask the Minister, if he held up supplies against the consumer in order to get more profit, whether the Minister is now converted to the profit motive?

Dr. Summerskill

The answer to the first part of the hon. Member's supplementary question is, "Yes, including the Orpington area." The answer to the second part is, "No."
