HC Deb 01 March 1948 vol 448 c29
58. Mr. Baldwin

asked the Minister of Agriculture how many members of his staff attend markets in England and Wales with display stalls of books and pamphlets; how much literature is sold; and what is the cost.

Mr. T. Williams

Nineteen sales clerks attend markets, shows and demonstrations, agricultural institutions and farmers' meetings, as well as exhibitions and meetings for allotment holders and gardeners. Since March, 1941, over 11,000 such visits have been paid, and some 470,000 publications have been sold for over £20,000. About 9,000 new subscribers have been secured for the Ministry's Journal "Agriculture," and over 5,500,000 free technical leaflets on a wide variety of subjects affecting increased food production have been distributed. The estimated annual cost for salaries, travelling, and subsistence expenses is £10,000.
