HC Deb 01 December 1948 vol 458 c1992
24. Mr. Scott-Elliot

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is taking steps to encourage the setting up of Co-operatives in the West African Colonies.

Mr. Creech Jones

Yes, Sir. The Governments concerned are doing everything possible to encourage the growth of producer, consumer and marketing cooperatives. Much has already been achieved, and particular attention is now being paid to staffing problems and to the supply of consumer goods.

Mr. Scott-Elliot

Can my right hon. Friend say when this is likely to be put into effect? Does he realise the importance of ensuring that foodstuffs are sold at the lowest possible prices to raise the standard of living of these people?

Mr. Creech Jones

Already a great deal of new work is being done in the field of consumer co-operation.

Mr. W. Fletcher

Would the Minister see to it that some rabbits, turkeys and sugar are sent as opening stock?
