§ 81. Colonel Clarkeasked the Minister of Fuel and Power whether the Government's offer of living accommodation for transferred miners applies to men who undertake to return to the industry from other occupations.
§ Mr. GaitskellI have been unable to ascertain to what offer precisely the Question relates but if the hon. Member will let me have particulars I shall be glad to look into the matter.
§ Colonel ClarkeMay I ask the Minister whether they will be guaranteed accommodation directly they are transferred from other occupations to mining, or whether they will be merely put on a list, because there is a great difference in the amount of inducement?
§ Mr. GaitskellThe National Coal Board, I think I can be sure, will do everything in its power to provide hostel accommodation or lodgings for men transferred from other areas.
§ Mr. GallacherArising out of the Question about transferring miners and consideration being given as to accommodation, will the Minister do everything possible to see that the priorities promised to miners will find their way into mining areas, as they are not at the present time?
§ Mr. GaitskellI cannot agree with that.
§ Mr. GallacherWill the hon. Gentleman come and have a look?
§ Mr. GaitskellI am quite prepared to do that. But I can assure the hon. Member that very considerable progress is being made in this matter of building accommodation in the mining areas.
