HC Deb 13 November 1947 vol 444 cc546-7
45. Captain John Crowder

asked the Prime Minister whether any decision has yet been reached regarding the issue of the Army General Service Medal to troops who have served in Palestine since September, 1945.

46. Mr. A. R. W. Low

asked the Prime Minister if it is the intention that there should be any general recognition of recent service in Palestine by members of His Majesty's Forces.

The Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)

Yes, Sir. His Majesty has approved proposals for the grant of the General Service Medals for specified service in Palestine since 27th September, 1945. A short White Paper on the subject is available in the Vote Office.

Mr. Joynson-Hicks

Can the right hon. Gentleman say if that medal will cover naval personnel who have been serving in connection with the interception of ships in the Palestinian affair?

The Prime Minister

Perhaps the hon. Member would look at the White Paper, and if he then has any further question no doubt he will put it down. I am not quite sure on the point.

Mr. Douglas Marshall

In view of the fact that the right hon. Gentleman has recognised active service in Palestine, will he also consider the granting of a supplementary allowance of petrol for those on leave?
