§ 23. Mr. Shackletonasked the President of the Board of Trade what personal and household valuables, such as furs, jewellery, and silverware can be taken out of the United Kingdom by residents and by visitors to this country.
§ Mr. H. WilsonI have been considering what can be done to ease the orders covering the export of valuables. I have now made arrangments whereby United Kingdom residents visiting or emigrating to the sterling area direct may take personal valuables up to a value of £2,000 and emigrants may also include personal 528 or household valuables to the value of £200 in their unaccompanied effects. United Kingdom residents visiting the non-sterling area may take certain personal effects normally carried by passengers, e.g. a wedding ring, engagement ring and one used fur coat and a few articles of small value. Emigrants may include in their baggage personal or household valuables to a value of £200. Valuables in excess of these amounts may not be taken unless an export licence is granted. Visitors to the United Kingdom may take out without licence personal valuables brought in with them or purchased out of their own currency.
