HC Deb 12 November 1947 vol 444 cc372-3
40 and 42. Mr. Skinnard

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies (1) how many Africans have been settled on new land in Kenya since the end of the war; and at what cost to the Kenya Government;

(2) what Government assistance has been given to the 669 European settlers who have taken up land in Kenya since the war; whether the land they are occupying was previously unoccupied or in European occupation; and whether he will give an assurance that no further Government assistance will be given to new claimants.

Mr. Rees-Williams

I regret that in the time available it has not been possible to secure all the information required from the Government of Kenya. I will communicate with the hon. Member as soon as I receive it.

Mr. Baldwin

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that much of the land that has been handed back to the Africans during the last few years is land in a state of erosion, and will he ensure that when in future land is handed back conditions will be laid down to ensure that it is properly cultivated?
