HC Deb 12 November 1947 vol 444 c363
15. Mr. Shepherd

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give an undertaking that no factory will be demolished in Germany until suitable alternative factory and domestic accommodation is available to those likely to be displaced by the demolition.

The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Mr. Ernest Bevin)

The only factories liable to demolition are those which were engaged on the production of war material, for which purpose clearly no alternative accommodation should be provided. The conditions under which such factories are to be demolished require further examination on a quadripartite basis. Pending such examination, the British Military Governor has, for humanitarian reasons, suspended the demolition of surface buildings other than military constructions.

Mr. Shepherd

May I take it from the reply of the right hon. Gentleman that the requirements which are asked on this Question are being met at the present time?

Mr. Bevin

I do not want the hon. Gentleman to read into my answer more than I have said.
