HC Deb 06 February 1947 vol 432 c1960
54. Mr. S. Shephard

asked the Minister of Labour if the deficiency of manpower in agriculture, estimated in Cmd. 7018 at 33,000, is after taking into account the number of prisoners of war working in agriculture to be repatriated during 1947.

Mr. Isaacs

Yes, Sir.

Mr. Shephard

Since that is so, can the Minister say from what sources recruitment is being made?

Mr. Isaacs

I could not say that without notice.

Mr. Shephard

Is it from the Poles?

Mr. Isaacs

I cannot say without notice.

Mr. Driberg

In view of his original answer, can my right hon. Friend tell the House how many prisoners of war are to be repatriated during 1947?

Mr. Isaacs

I cannot go outside the answer. I was asked a straight Question and I gave a straight answer. If the hon. Member desires other information perhaps he will put down a Question.

Mr. Driberg

Yes, but, in preparing his straight answer, was not my right hon. Friend obliged to ascertain the number concerned?
