HC Deb 24 October 1946 vol 428 cc25-6
38. Mr. K. Lindsay

asked the Minister of Education how many of the 25,000 men and women who have been accepted for Emergency Training Colleges, and for whom places are not at present available, are ex-Service personnel; how many are still in the Services; and how many have found temporary employment with local education authorities as clerks, teachers or youth leaders.

Miss Wilkinson

Of the accepted candidates who have not yet been offered places in colleges, about 14,000 are ex-Service personnel and about 8,000 are still in the Services. I am unable to give precise information on the last part of the Question, but I have asked local education authorities to give me early in November reports showing what they are doing for waiting candidates in their areas.

Mr. Lindsay

Would the Minister say whether it is true, as reported last Sunday, that candidates are still coming in at the rate of 1,000 a week? Is there to be any termination of this, or can they all be placed?

Miss Wilkinson

I think it would be true to say that 1,000 a week represents the peak figure; it is not now as many as that, but it is well on in the hundreds.
