asked the Minister of Agriculture how many farm institutes there are in England and Wales; and which counties have not provided this or some alternative scheme of residential agricultural education.

There are 17 farm institutes in England and Wales of which one has been provided by two County Councils jointly. I have recently approved proposals for the establishment of five further farm institutes, which will be used initially as training centres under the Government's Agricultural Training Scheme. I am circulating in the Official Report a list of the remaining counties, but would explain that proposals from many of them are in varying stages of preparation or consideration.

Note.— A farm institute at Askham Bryan established by the Yorks Council for Agricultural Education was completed in 1939, but, the war intervening, has since been used for other purposes and its future use is under consideration.
