HC Deb 16 July 1946 vol 425 c1048
60. Mr. A. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of people paying Income Tax and Surtax who are not gainfully employed; and the total sum of their returned incomes under the Income Tax Acts.

Mr. Dalton

For 1937–38, the only year for which this information is available, 290,000 persons with incomes exceeding £200 and an aggregate total income of £220 millions.

Mr. Lewis

Could the Chancellor state how many out of that number were in receipt of superannuation or pensions?

Mr. Dalton

No, Sir. I am afraid it would be quite impossible to ascertain that.
