HC Deb 09 July 1946 vol 425 cc235-6
61. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the number of persons of the industrial staffs excluded in Cmd. 6842.

The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Glenvil Hall)

The number of Government industrial employees on 1st April, 1946, was 426,510.

Sir W. Smithers

Does not the Financial Secretary realise that this enormous increase of industrial employees has to be paid and industry must bear the brunt, and that that must increase our costs of production and so impede and destroy our ability to compete in the markets of the world? Is not our first job to earn extra dollars?
