HC Deb 09 July 1946 vol 425 cc229-30
50. Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why it is a condition of the present trade negotiations with Denmark that the Danish currency be devalued.

Mr. Dalton

There is no such condition.

Colonel Crosthwaite-Eyre

May I ask the Chancellor to give a further assurance that no such depreciation of foreign currencies will take place to aid our imports until such time as we are able to compete in exports with these other European countries?

Mr. Dalton

Denmark is a self-governing country, and their arrangements are for their Parliament and their Government to make. No such condition as is suggested has been proposed by our negotiators in these discussions.
