HC Deb 09 July 1946 vol 425 c229
49. Mr. Stanley Prescott

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if sanction can now be given for the reopening of the office of His Majesty's Inspector of Taxes at Darwen.

Mr. Dalton

I have nothing to add to the reply given to the hon. Member's Question on the same subject on 22nd January.

Mr. Prescott

Does the Chancellor appreciate the very grave inconvenience caused to thousands of taxpayers in Darwen, who, after all, are entitled to some consideration? Whilst I appreciate that there are other instances besides Darwen throughout the country, will the Chancellor give an undertaking to review the whole matter favourably in six months' time?

Mr. Dalton

We must set our faces against useless hordes of officials, and I cannot believe that, in fact, thousands of the hon. Gentleman's constituents are inconvenienced by this arrangement. In my belief barely a dozen in a year have to visit that office.

Mr. Prescott

That is entirely incorrect.
