HC Deb 28 February 1946 vol 419 cc2094-5
35. Mr. Frederick Willey

asked the Minister of Health whether he is now in a position to make a statement regarding the future of the North-Eastern Housing Association.

41. Miss Colman

asked the Minister of Health whether he can now state his policy with regard to the North-Eastern Housing Association.

Mr. Bevan

I do not think that there is any longer a case for giving special Exchequer subsidy to this Association under the Special Areas (Development and Improvement) Act, 1934, and it will not, therefore, provide any further houses wholly at the cost of the Exchequer as it did before the war. The association will, in common with other associations, continue to manage the houses it has provided; and if any local authority likes to make arrangements with it in accordance with the existing statutory provisions for the provision of additional houses with the aid of the normal Exchequer subsidy, there is no reason why such an authority should not do so. Most of the local authorities in the area, however, are. willing and eager to resume the full exercise of their housing powers
