HC Deb 20 February 1946 vol 419 c1122
2. Mr. Peter Freeman

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will invite U.N.O. to make 1st May a public holiday throughout the world,.to celebrate peace, and to honour those in the Forces and amongst civilians who have helped to bring this about.

Mr. Bevin

No, Sir. I do not think that this is really a matter for the United Nations Organisation. Every country has its own national system of holidays and it would not be easy to reach common agreement on a new date.

Mr. E. P. Smith

Would the right hon. Gentleman consider an alternative date?

Mr. Bevin

I would if all the constituents were Conservatives.

Sir Waldron Smithers

Would not 1st April be a 'better date?
