HC Deb 20 February 1946 vol 419 cc1122-3
4. Flight-Lieutenant Haire

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, in view of the worsening conditions in Hungary, any of the agreed U.N.R.R.A. relief has now reached that country.

Mr. Bevin

I understand that no relief supplies have yet reached Hungary owing to inland transport difficulties. U.N.R.R.A. hoped to make use of the port of Constanza, but have recently been informed that this is not available and are now proposing to use Trieste. It is hoped that the difficulties will shortly be overcome, and that the first consignment of about 1,000 tons will then be shipped.

Flight-Lieutenant Haire

In view of the high mortality rate, which is daily increasing, and the conditions in the hospitals, would my right hon. Friend consider rushing medicines there, possibly by aircraft?

Mr. Bevin

I have very great difficulty with this transport in Europe, and I am not the sole master of these communications.
