HC Deb 03 April 1946 vol 421 cc1230-1
18. Mr. J. Langford-Holt

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what progress has been made by his Department with the payment of gratuities to the next of kin of officers and ratings killed in action.

Mr. Duģdale

Out of approximately 31,000 claims so far received in respect of deceased officers and ratings of the Royal Navy, payment has been authorised in about 21,000 cases.

Mr. Langford-Holt

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there are cases outstanding in which appeals have been made concerning incidents as far back as the sinking of the "Glorious" in 1940, and will he take every step to see that these cases are dealt with immediately?

Mr. Duģdale

Certainly, but I must point out that this Department is very heavily overworked; indeed, they are working at such pressure that it would be difficult, without additional staff, for them to deal with the cases.

Hon. Members: Get additional staff.

Captain Marsden

Would it not be much nicer if these payments were made without a claim being made?

Mr. Duģdale

I will certainly consider that, but it would affect the other Services as well.
