§ 18. Mr. J. Langford-Holtasked the First Lord of the Admiralty what progress has been made by his Department with the payment of gratuities to the next of kin of officers and ratings killed in action.
Mr. DuģdaleOut of approximately 31,000 claims so far received in respect of deceased officers and ratings of the Royal Navy, payment has been authorised in about 21,000 cases.
§ Mr. Langford-HoltIs the hon. Gentleman aware that there are cases outstanding in which appeals have been made concerning incidents as far back as the sinking of the "Glorious" in 1940, and will he take every step to see that these cases are dealt with immediately?
Mr. DuģdaleCertainly, but I must point out that this Department is very heavily overworked; indeed, they are working at such pressure that it would be difficult, without additional staff, for them to deal with the cases.
§ Hon. Members: Get additional staff.
§ Captain MarsdenWould it not be much nicer if these payments were made without a claim being made?
