HC Deb 26 November 1945 vol 416 cc866-7
4. Mr. Robens

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he has any information regarding negotiations between Messrs. Unilever, Limited, and the Czechoslovak Government on compensation for a subsidiary of that company taken over by Czechoslovakia; and what has been the result of these negotiations.

Mr. Noel-Baker

I understand that an agent of Messrs. Unilever's Limited is at present engaged in conversations with the Czechoslovak Government about the future of the firm's undertakings in Czechoslovakia. These negotiations are being closely watched by His Majesty's Government but no decisions have yet been reached.

Mr. Robens

Has my right hon. Friend any information that supplies of fats are being withheld until these negotiations are completed with Unilever Limited?

Mr. Noel-Baker

No, Sir, I have no such information. If my hon. Friend will furnish me with any, I will have it looked into.

Major Guy Lloyd

Are His Majesty's Government taking any direct initiative in similar negotiations which might be going on with other firms and the Czechoslovak Government?

Mr. Noel-Baker

Not that I am aware, but perhaps the hon. and gallant Gentleman will put the question on the Paper.
