5. Lieut.-Colonel J. R. H. Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, as a result of the recent elections in Hungary, His Majesty's Government propose to recognise the newly elected Hungarian Government.

Mr. Noel-Baker

Yes, Sir, the elections in Hungary were held on 4th November and on 17th November. The United Kingdom representative in Budapest informed the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs that His Majesty's Government were prepared to enter into direct relations with the new Hungarian Government and to receive a Hungarian Government representative in London.

Lieut.-Colonel Hutchison

Can the right hon. Gentleman inform us if the Soviet Government are taking similar steps?

Mr. Noel-Baker

No, Sir, I am afraid I cannot answer for the Soviet Government.
