§ 51. Lieutenant William Shepherdasked the Minister of Food if he will consider controlling the prices of drinks in restaurants as these inflated charges have the effect of defeating the purpose of the regulation price for meals.
§ Sir B. SmithThe Meals in Establishments Order prescribes maximum prices for whisky, gin and beer when served at a meal. I do not consider an extension of the list necessary to the purposes of the Order, which was intended to prevent ostentatious meals while food supplies were short. I regret, that from some reports I have heard, some catering establishments appear to be charging prices for wine which I regard as excessive. I am investigating this problem, and if the facts are proved I will consider what suitable action I can take.
