§ 9. Sir John Mellorasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he will now request the Egyptian Government to re-establish the exclusive jurisdiction of the mixed courts to try British subjects in Egypt for all offences punishable by law in accordance with the Treaty of Montreux.
§ Mr. BevinNow that the emergency which was the reason for the creation of this military jurisdiction has ceased to exist, I have no doubt the Egyptian Government will take steps to repeal these provisions. After the repeal, the exclusive criminal jurisdiction of the Mixed Courts over British subjects as provided by the Montreux Convention will be restored.
§ Sir J. MellorWill the Foreign Secretary invite the Egyptian Government to take this course at an early date?
§ Mr. BevinThe talks are going on, and I do not think there is any need of a special invitation. The Egyptian Government are quite aware of what we desire to be done in this matter.
