HC Deb 22 August 1945 vol 413 cc591-2
5. Squadron-Leader Donner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he has made, or will make, an approach to the Egyptian Government regarding the position of Maltese British subjects conscripted in Egypt for His Majesty's Forces; and what measures he proposes to take to discharge our obligations to them.

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir. His Majesty's Ambassador approached the Egyptian Government some time ago regarding the future position of British subjects, including Maltese, who were normally resident in Egypt before being conscripted into His Majesty's Forces and received satisfactory assurances which should facilitate their reabsorption into civil life. With the same object in view Rehabilitation Boards are being set up in Egypt. While I am not yet in a position to describe the final measures which will be taken for the welfare of these British subjects, who have rendered most valuable services, I can assure the hon. and gallant Member that the matter is being actively pursued between the various Departments concerned.
