HC Deb 22 August 1945 vol 413 c591
4. Squadron-Leader Donner

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether it is the intention of His Majesty's Government to enter into negotiations for the revision of the Anglo-Egyptian Treaty of 1936; and whether he will give an assurance that the present constitutional position of the Sudan will be maintained, and that the position of the numerous Maltese British subjects settled in Egypt will be safeguarded.

Mr. Bevin

I regret that I am unable to make a statement on this subject at present, beyond saying that I have read the remarks recently made by the Egyptian Prime Minister in this connection in the Egyptian Parliament, and that His Majesty's Government will at the appropriate time approach the question with the same friendliness and appreciation of our mutual interests as characterised the concluding part of that speech.

Squadron-Leader Donner

Will the right hon. Gentleman bear in mind the position of the British Maltese subjects in Egypt, the families of some of whom have been there for as long as 100 years?

Mr. Bevin

Yes, Sir.
