§ 37. Mr. Loganasked the First Lord of the Admiralty the result of the inquiry into the loss of the four naval ratings; and if, under the special circumstances of the case, he is prepared to pay full burial expenses and compensation for loss of life of Seaman Trainor, Flinder Street, Liverpool.
Mr. AlexanderThe report of the inquiry into this accident is being examined, and I am not yet in a position to state the result. In the case of the late Seaman Trainor, the cost of the coffin and of its conveyance to Liverpool has been met from naval funds. The next-of-kin has been informed that, in addition, a grant of up to £5 will be paid towards the remaining funeral expenses.
§ Mr. LoganIs the right hon. Gentleman prepared, if the Treasury will not allow an ordinary pension, to give an ex gratia payment to the dependants?
Mr. AlexanderThe report is being examined. If negligence by naval personnel, apart from those who are deceased, were found to have operated, compensation, without reference to any sum that might be due for the payment of pensions, would certainly be considered.
