HC Deb 25 October 1944 vol 404 c158
36. Vice-Admiral Taylor

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty to what extent the emoluments paid to naval officers are based on their responsibilities in accordance with their rank or their age.

The First Lord of the Admiralty (Mr. A. V. Alexander)

The emoluments of naval officers are related to rank. The responsibility attaching to any particular appointment is taken into consideration in deciding the rank of officer who should fill it.

Vice-Admiral Taylor

Is my right hon. Friend aware that, in answer to a previous Question, he specially drew attention to the age of naval officers when comparing their pay with that of officers in the other Services, thereby entirely ignoring the naval officers' length of service before they acquired their present rank? In view of that answer, will he discontinue this practice?

Mr. Alexander

I hardly think that that arises out of this particular Question.
