HC Deb 26 July 1944 vol 402 c746
13. Sir John Mellor

asked the Minister of Information what communications are now permitted to pass uncensored from the United Kingdom to Eire.

The Minister of Information (Mr. Brendan Bracken)

All communications other than diplomatic communications passing between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Eire are subject to censorship.

Sir J. Mellor

Are not diplomatic communications liable to defeat the purposes of the drastic restrictions upon travel to Ireland?

Mr. Bracken

This matter has been most carefully investigated by the security officers of the Government, and they are satisfied about the present arrangements.

Mr. Thorne

If a man or woman sends a letter to relatives in Eire, is it censored?

Mr. Bracken

Yes, Sir.

Professor Savory

Is not the Eire Government still in diplomatic relationship with the German Government?

Mr. Speaker

That is another question altogether.
