HC Deb 21 September 1943 vol 392 c17
42. Mr. Hogg

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been drawn to the fact that whereas officers returning from the Middle East are given special clothing coupons to stock their wardrobes, no special coupons are awarded to other ranks; and whether he can announce a concession which will allay the dissatisfaction caused by this anomaly?

Sir J. Grigg

Other ranks returning from overseas receive, from War Department stocks, the articles of clothing required to complete their kit to the regulation scale for home stations. They are in the same position as all other ranks at home, and an issue of coupons is not necessary.

Mr. Hogg

Can my right hon. Friend explain why discrimination is made as between officers and other ranks in this matter? Is he aware of the great dissatisfaction among officers also at this discrimination?

Sir J. Grigg

Because officers have to buy their uniforms. This seems to me an excellent reason for discrimination.
