HC Deb 20 October 1943 vol 392 cc1376-7
44. Mr. Riley

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he can make any statement regarding the negotiations which have recently been taking place for the purchase of the Jamaican nationally-owned telephone service by the Telephone and General Trust, Limited, of London?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

As my right hon. and gallant Friend stated on 4th August, the matter was referred to the Jamaica Legislative Council, and a recent Press report indicates that the Council is in favour of the sale of this undertaking. On receipt of the Governor's report, which is no doubt on its way, my right hon. arid gallant Friend will consider further action in the light of the Council's deliberations.

Mr. Riley

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that two Committees were appointed which reported against the purchase of this public-owned service and that there is a strong public feeling against it?

Mr. Emrys-Evans

My right hon. and gallant Friend will take all these matters into consideration.
