HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 c10
6. Lieut.-Colonel Sir Thomas Moore

asked the Secretary of State for War what arrangements he has made, or has in mind, for the more general use of military bands during the coming summer months?

Sir J. Grigg

Instructions have been issued that bands should, as far as possible, take every opportunity offered by civil authorities to play in public. It must not, however, be forgotten that the primary duty of military bands is to play for the troops.

Sir T. Moore

While thanking my right hon. Friend for his reply, as far as it went, may I ask whether he will not consider the greater use of bands marching with troops through the streets of our cities and towns? Would it not stimulate the morale of the troops themselves as well as that of the onlookers? That is what we want.

Sir J. Grigg

As most of the movements between towns take place in motor vehicles, I do not think a band would look very well playing in two or three separate motor lorries.

Mr. Rhys Davies

Will bands be entitled to play the "Internationale"?
