HC Deb 30 March 1943 vol 388 cc9-10
5. Mr. Gledhill

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will give the number of officers of both A and B category, respectively, employed by the Claims Commission in both London and the country who are under 35 years of age; what steps are being taken for their replacement; and the number so graded who are between 35 and 40 years of age?

Sir J. Grigg

There are 48 officers in the Claims Commission in category A and 15 in category B under 35 years of age. There are 37 in category A and 4 in category B between 35 and 40 years old. Steps have been taken to transfer those under 30 in category A to field units and their place in the Claims Commission will be taken, as far as possible, by other officers with the necessary technical qualifications who are not suitable for service in field units.

Mr. Gledhill

Can the Minister say when the releases will actually take place? Is he not aware that there are many men in the ranks who have knowledge of this work and who might be commissioned and used to replace younger men?

Sir J. Grigg

My experience is that it is extremely difficult to replace these people. In regard to the first part of the question, transfers are taking place now.
