§ 23. Lady Apsleyasked the Secretary of State for War whether he will consider the issue of pyjamas, or coupons with which to purchase them, to soldiers in His Majesty's forces?
§ Sir J. GriggPyjamas have never been issued to other ranks either free or on repayment, and I regret that the shortage of materials is such that I cannot hold out any hopes that the present policy can be reversed. I would also refer the Noble Lady to the answer given by my right hon. Friend the President of the Board of Trade to my hon. Friend the Member for North Hackney (Sir A. Hudson) on 23rd February.
§ Lady ApsleyIs my right hon. Friend aware of the hardship which this causes to the wives who have to supply the necessary coupons?
§ Sir J. GriggI think that I am aware by this time of practically all the considerations in this matter. I seem to be in a complete dilemma about it, and I do not think it is a problem which is soluble.
§ Mr. Ivor ThomasWill the right hon. Gentleman agree with the principle that pyjamas should be issued to private soldiers?
§ Sir J. GriggI will not accept any principle unless I am in a position to carry it into effect.
Mr. DugdaleWill the right hon. Gentleman consider preventing any civilians having material for pyjamas until the soldiers have got them?
