§ 22. Lady Apsleyasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that £1 10s. to purchase civilian clothes on discharge from the Auxiliary Territorial Service is insufficient at the present time for women discharged on medical or other grounds; and whether he has yet decided to increase the amount?
§ Sir J. GriggYes, Sir. It has now been decided to increase the grant, and the necessary instructions will be issued as soon as possible.
§ 28. Mr. Pearsonasked the Secretary of State for War whether he is aware that orders have been issued by the senior commander, Auxiliary Territorial Service, at Donnington Camp, Salop, forbidding parcels containing eatables in their quarters; and will he take steps to have the order rescinded?
§ Sir J. GriggThe order referred to was issued because it was found that auxiliaries were keeping food in their quarters under most unhygienic conditions. Arrangements are now being made for perishable food received or bought by the auxiliaries to be stored in unit storerooms from which it can be drawn as required. The order will be modified accordingly.
§ Mr. PearsonWhile appreciating the reply, may I ask my right hon. Friend to undertake to see that any charges against members of the unit referred to under this order are erased from the records?
§ Sir J. GriggI do not admit that it was an unreasonable order. It was a perfectly 520 natural and reasonable one, and if the hon. Gentleman wants to make any suggestion of victimisation, perhaps he will communicate the charges to me.
