HC Deb 02 February 1943 vol 386 cc741-2
36. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Secretary of State for War whether he will arrange for post-war credits to be drawn on discharge by men who have been retired from the Army on grounds other than medical disability?

Sir J. Grigg

No, Sir. Post-war credits are to be released for payment during the war only for persons invalided out of the Services or to the estate in the event of death.

Mr. Bellenger

Why does the right hon. Gentleman make this distinction between soldiers discharged on account of disability and others who may be discharged for equally good reasons?

Sir J. Grigg

I am under the impression that this treatment for the Services is already more favourable than anything that happens in civil life.

Mr. Pritt

Is one of the reasons why the right hon. Gentleman does not want to pay out money to loyal anti-Fascists who are turned out of the Army that they are loyal anti-Fascists?

Sir J. Grigg

I am quite unable to understand the point of that question. The only thing I should like to explain to the hon. and learned Gentleman, who has been making a lot of speeches outside, is that I am not in the least anti-Russian but I am pro-British, and I hope he can say the same.

Mr. Pritt

As the right hon. Gentleman claims to be pro-British, would he amend his conduct so that he does not consistently malign and belittle one of our most important Allies?
