HC Deb 19 November 1942 vol 385 c506
71. Mr. Colegate

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware that great difficulty is being experienced by technical schools and colleges in obtaining text-books; and whether he is taking steps to remedy this state of affairs?

Mr. Butler

The question of the adequacy of the supply of books has recently been carefully investigated, and although the publishers are necessarily alloted a considerably smaller supply of paper than they were using before the war owing to the need for saving shipping space, I have no reason to think that this is at present causing any serious interference with the work of the technical schools. I am, however, keeping the position constantly under review.

Mr. De la Bère

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware, as regards paper, that there is an adequate supply of straw from which to make paper in this country, and therefore, no shipping space is required?
