HC Deb 25 March 1942 vol 378 c1993
52. Mr. Silverman

asked the Prime Minister whether he can give an assurance that the Government do not contemplate any action designed to limit the right of the Press or of the public to criticise the Government, their policy, or their conduct of the war?

Mr. Attlee

I have nothing to add to the very full statements which have already been made by the Home Secretary on this subject. These contain all the assurances necessary.

Mr. Silverman

Does my right hon. Friend realise that the over-sensitiveness of the Government to criticism is having a lamentable effect on the public morale, and will he not, therefore, give an assurance that, where criticism is made to which the Government object, decisions will be taken with non-party judgment and not in an atmosphere of politics?

Mr. Attlee

I have already said that I have nothing to add to the very full statement by my right hon. Friend. It is obvious that it is not possible by question and answer to go into the point my hon. Friend raises.
