HC Deb 24 March 1942 vol 378 cc1786-7
14. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, in view of the fact that controversial subjects are introduced into sermons at compulsory church parades, he will, while allowing ample opportunity for voluntary worship, consider abolishing the compulsory church parade service?

Mr. Sandys

I am not disposed to depart from the present practice, which is common to all three Services. I am making inquiries into the specific case to which my hon. Friend has drawn my attention.

Mr. Sorensen

Does the hon. Member appreciate that some resentment has been felt at this alleged sermon by an Army chaplain calling upon the A.T.S. and girls and soldiers present to marry early and have larger families; and does he not think it was entirely inappropriate?

Mr. Sandys

I am not prepared to comment upon the propriety of this particular sermon until I have completed my inquiries.

Mr. Sorensen

It is rather embarrassing if taken too literally.

Sir J. Lamb

Is this a matter for the War Office or the Ministry of Production?
