HC Deb 04 March 1942 vol 378 c642
45. Mr. Bellenger

asked the Prime Minister whether, as part of the scheme for general reconstruction after the cessation of hostilities, His Majesty's Government will give immediate consideration to the question of gratuities to members of the Services, and give to the House an early indication of their proposals?

The Deputy Prime Minister (Mr. Attlee)

This is a question which will have to be settled by the Government of the day in the light of the circumstances then prevailing.

Mr. Bellenger

Why should that be? Is this not part of the general conditions of service just as much as the improvements in pay and allowances which have been announced recently and just as urgent as plans for demobilisation?

Mr. Attlee

No, I think not.
